Chapter 7

Ezekiel hurried to his new assignment and waited at the spot where he was to help a new soul cross over to the other side. He stood in the shade of a brick building and watched shoppers walk past.

People couldn’t see him and occasionally he would have to move aside because someone was about to walk through him. He hated the feeling of suddenly sharing someone else’s body even for a moment.

Every now and then, he caught a few words the passersby’s were saying before they were out of his hearing range. They were mundane everyday problems that amounted to nothing. He’d had those same world shattering problems when he was alive. Ezekiel would love to have them again. He listened closely to the next two women who passed by.

“John asked me to go out with him Saturday night. I don’t have anything nice to wear, and I can’t afford a new dress on this week’s paycheck. The rent’s due.”

The other woman complained, “Lucky you to get to go out. The baby kept me up crying with colic all night. I’m so tired I have to fight to stay awake, and I almost laid my head down on my desk today and fell asleep. That’s all I need is for my boss to catch me sleeping on the job, He’d fire me on the spot.”

Ezekiel smiled at the things mortals thought were so important. That woman should be glad the baby is alive, and she can hear it cry. Just a few days ago, he’d carried a newborn baby boy to heaven wrapped in a blue blanket. Its little soul smiled up at him as he held it gently in his arms. He talked to the baby all the way up the path telling him of all the wonderful things he would see and do in heaven. And, even sang a lullaby to the baby that he’d made up himself. The baby had smiled and cooed thinking he was helping Ezekiel sing the song. This baby he handed straight to the angels. There was no judgment here.

While waiting Ezekiel thought about Ellen and the way she’d felt in his arms, and his lips on hers. If the saints would forgive him and give him a second chance at life, he could hold Ellen in his arms every night and make passionate love to her. He pictured in his mind the beautiful babies they would make together.

Ezekiel heard sirens in the distance that grew louder the closer they came. Tires squeeling, car horns were blowing angrily at some car whose driver must have been a crazy person. The car was weaving back and forth across the lanes of traffic, and then sideswiped several parked cars. There were frightened screams, and people running for safety. Ezekiel waited, he knew this was going to be his assignment.

Sure enough at the intersection, several cars collided with the wrenching sound of metal crunching against metal. Horrible sounds that you’d have thought were the sounds of war on the battlefield.
